Status Power and Display

Status

Employing dramatic techniques to gain recognition, are those individuals who adopt extravagant behaviors in place of customary means that are beyond their grasp.  This device is practically universal among the frustrated members of minority groups whose activities are not rigidly controlled.

Social Power

Members of the upper classes fought to maintain status by asserting their superior taste and financial strength, through elitism of couture. however, the escalation power of images has meant that previously excluded groups now seek to create ‘imagined’ status for themselves through the construction of styles which mark out their own territory, immune to the taunts from their supposed betters.

Symbols of Power

Fashion advertising and magazines images, constantly hold out the promise of the attainment of such ideas, yet for all but  the very wealthy the products contained are unobtainable, consumed visually rather than literally.
